I’ve been a fan of Liz Cook’s work, but I never knew much about her. That’s different now with this ‘Under the Skin’ video. It’s interesting to learn a little more about Liz, how she got started in tattooing, her shop, and how she views her style.
As always, thanks to Sullen Clothing for these videos.

You’re probably familiar with the Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopedia. At this point, I think it’s safe to say they’ve reached legendary status. What goes with criminals? Well, prisons obviously. Below is the documentary of the Russian prison tattoo movement.
At forty-five minutes long, it’s longer than your average Youtube video but that’s why I’m posting it on Friday night. Don’t worry, I’m not judging.

They shot so much amazing footage, it’s spread across three videos. The list of attending artists was ridiculous, so don’t be surprised if you start one and end up watching all three.

Chances are you know how a tattoo machine works, but you probably don’t know that the needles penetrate the skin eighty to one hundred and fifty times per second. This video doesn’t tell you that, but I think you’ll be surprised how much the skin shakes.
Oh, and this video features Gaëtan Le Gargasson tattooing.

This video below features Alex Binnie and Duncan X, and was produced by Gestalten. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the author of the new book “Forever: The New Tattoo” that we posted about on Friday.
So what’s it about? Good question, keep reading…
A new tattoo underground has emerged in recently years and their cutting-edge visuals go far beyond the tattoo mainstream. Visual artist Alex Binnie is a legend within the international tattoo scene and his Into You studio that he’s been running for 19 years in East London continues to foster countless talents and innovators including Curly, Thomas Hooper, Nick Schonberger and Duncan X to name but a few—all featured in Gestalten’s new Forever: The New Tattoo book. We met Duncan and Alex in London to talk about the current mass appeal of tattoos, its uniqueness as an art form and the “holy trinity” of tattooing styles.

The release party for Gestalten’s new book, “Forever: The New Tattoo” happened and it was quite the event. Instead of me trying to write a better intro, I’m just going to share the info from the video… and add links so you can click and drool.
The suggestion that “tattoos are not just for sailors any more” is a familiar one. It might be surprising to learn, then, that the popular media has been reporting the arrival of tattooing in high society for nearly one hundred years. To celebrate the release of “Forever: The New Tattoo”, Gestalten hosted an evening of informative and entertaining talks by renowned tattoo artists Alex Binnie and Duncan X, as well as by heavily tattooed art historian Matt Lodder, author of the book’s preface. Further tattoo protagonists, namely Jon John, Liam Sparkes and Zoe Binnie, attended the event at the Gestalten Space in Berlin and gave us additional insight.
