I just know one thing

I don’t know what the hell this is exactly, I just know it’s good… and I’m perfectly ok with that.

I also know that the sentence above is not proper grammar, and I’m perfectly ok with that too.

Harlequin

A good portion of the work I’ve seen from Aron Dubois has a real “old timey” feel to. I really dig the look, especially since so few tattooers seem to be putting so much time into developing a Victorian-infused tattoo style.

Video: Behind the Needle 2

The videos from Papercut Pictures keep on coming. The first video was from the London Tattoo Convention, while the second one went behind the scenes and into the minds of the artists. This third one dives into the minds of four specific artists, and talks about a variety of aspects in their personal and professional lives.

Behind the Needle 2 features four more of our favourites: Ryan Mason (Scapegoat Tattoo, Portland), Jo Harrison (Modern Body Art, Birmingham), Steve Vinall (The Family Business, London) and Brian Thomas Wilson (Scapegoat Tattoo, Portland).

Ryan tells us how he needed to find something to do with his life, that wasn’t a shitty job after dropping out of art school, and what’s it’s like tattooing in Portland.

Jo talks about punks, rockers and what it’s like being in the tattoo world as a woman. She was actually pregnant at the time of filming and has since given birth to a beautiful baby girl called Marley.

Since Steve has been able to hold a pencil all he has really done is draw, he sees tattooing as one of the strongest and most permanent ways to put your imagery into the world.

Brian tells us how he got lucky by being offered an apprenticeship and was ‘pretty bad’ for a long time. Now he loves the symbolism of fairy tales in his tattoos. He works with Ryan at Scapegoat, and as you can see from the film, they really love each other, ahh.

Don’t forget all of these videos are courtesy of Zeitgeist Magazine.

Fox Day: A classic

Images like this always make me think more of illustrations than tattoos. (Not that that’s a bad thing, by any means.)

Bring me the boar!

Admire Brian Wilson’s work but don’t  live in Portland? You’re in luck–he has guest spots on the horizon:

  • July 2-12 at Jayne Doe in Essex, England
  • July 19-24 at Bright Side Tattoo in Copenhagen Denmark.

After that he’s back in the States for some possible time at Saved in Brooklyn, NY. Of course if you are in Portland it seems British tattooer James Kiley will be visiting Scapegoat from the 1st-7th of August. (You might want to double check those dates with him, just in case.)
