Did you know that when Gunnar tattoos a hand, they have four fingers? Seriously. Look here, here, and here.

It’s always a good feeling posting a tattoo artist from a small town. That artist today is Jeremy Damron, from Middletown, Ohio. I know Middletown is a hole in the wall because it’s only forty-five minutes from where I’m originally from. If you know of other tattoo artists in small towns, please share them with us. We absolutely love posting work from tattoo artists like this.

From John Embry:
This is the result of 12 hours of planning/sketching, marker drawing and tattooing. He came into it giving me full artistic license so we chose to develop this as a fine art piece as opposed to what would be cool to do as a tattoo. I did an ongoing survey of his interests during my sketching process and boiled the main concept down to the transition from natural to artificial via mathematics and the human element. The overall layout is built on the Fibonacci spiral; each element of the narrative follows the curve. I chose to go with an emulated ink-wash style to break up the heavy blacks and allow for the hinting of a neuron below the silhouette of the “neural network” of the world. The human element is referenced from a grainy photo of a young John Forbes Nash. Natural elements are employed throughout as a framing device and their removal for production is signified through negative space.

The Once Ridden Art Show was curated and organized by Joey Knuckles. The event took place at Art Machine Productions back in September, and seemed like a good time. Since the event, we’ve been in touch with Joey and we were waiting for the perfect time to have him answer a couple questions. With the word of the event traveling, and Joey not working due to Hurricane Sandy – the perfect time is now.
Excuse me while I fangirl out for a second, because I’ve always loved Gunnar’s work. Color me unsurprised that he won Tattoo of the Day on Saturday at the Portland Expo with the piece below.
