From the West Coast to the East Coast

Tonight Luke Wessman will be opening his newest art show at Max Fish in New York City. The opening reception starts at 9pm, and is open to the public. Here’s what Luke had to say about the event:

I’ve spent quite a few nights at this legendary Lower East Side bar/art gallery called Max Fish.  Out of the many places I’ve been to in this city, this is the one I feel the most at home. Thats why When I was asked about doing a show here I jumped at the opportunity. (second solo show ever, maybe last)

Max Fish is a Lower East Side institution, it has been serving cheap drinks back when Ludlow Street was nothing but dry goods stores and drug dealers. Now it’s all overpriced boutiques and frat boys, but Max remains, though the local clientele has been augmented by British tourists and PR girls. The big, high-ceilinged room has a pool table in the back, booths at both ends and a creative, ever-changing paint job pulling it all together.  Many complain about how bright the bar is, but the light level allows you to appreciate each month’s art show and offers a fighting chance against beer goggles.

The NYPD and the owner keep making attempts to shut this historical Lower East Side bar down, for no good reason. For now bar remains open and a landmark of significance to NYC, in particular its Lower East Side.  After over two decades, we hope it stays that way, open.

I’m honored to show some of my watercolor paintings at Max Fish, And to have my big brother Stack Aly DJ the event.

Love the Love

See that clever title? It’s actually correct grammar since I’m making reference to Ashley Love, the person, and not love, the emotion.

I’m willing to bet I screwed that last sentence up. Please be gentle grammar nazis.

If you’re in the New York area today, make sure you stop by Sacred Tattoo for their ‘Ho Hum Holiday Specials.’ Pick up a new tattoo for $50 and a new toy, blanket, or gently used winter clothing. All items will be donated to the Coalition for the Homeless.

Even if you’re not getting tattooed, this is a great event to support during the holiday season.

Video: Behind the Needle at the London Tattoo Convention

Two weeks ago we posted a London Tattoo Convention video that was really really good. The video was produced by Papercut Pictures for Zeitgeist Magazine, and dives a little deeper into some of the artists at the convention. Here’s the summary they posted about the video:

This film moves on from the convention, as each of the artists delves deeper into their personal motivations for becoming a tattoo artist, their distinctive style of tattooing, their heroes, inspiration and who they like to get tattooed by.

This film features Chad Koeplinger of Tattoo Paradise in Washington DC; Michelle Myles of Daredevil Tattoo in New York City; Uncle Allan of Conspiracy Inc Tattoo in Copenhagen, Denmark; and Claudia De Sabe of Jolie Rouge in London.
