I can only imagine what runs through a tattooer’s head the first time they catch a glimpse of a piece a client has asked them to “fix”. That being said, I want to show you guys this before/after photo from Pete Triolo because the fact is there’s (usually) some way to take something… not-so-great and make it better. Because nobody wants to spend the rest of their life with a fucked up tiger head taking up the majority of their upper back.

I’m actually asking because I have some large areas of black that I am very unhappy with and was wondering if this was possible for tattoos that have aged a little bit.

Okay, informative response: I’m not a tattooer so I can’t speak to the technical approach. But I can suggest you use the search box to the right, find a tattooer bee you and set up time for a consultation. They can tell you if your tattoo can be covered as-is, OR if your best bet is to seek out laser treatments first.

It’s usually better NOT to use black to cover with. It limits choices and is usually a lazy way to do a cover-up.
Darker spectrum colours, so dark purples, blues and sometimes greens are great for cover work, and try to consider something with a lot of detail which is why Japanese work is good for cover work: Peonies, Chrysanthemums, Koi’s, Dragons and Kirins (not enough Kirins!) are just a few examples of what works well. Cherry Blossoms and lighter colours just won’t do the job (pinks, reds, yellows are generally too translucent) If it is still quite a solid amount of black or large area, and the black is still dark it may well be worth having a couple of laser sessions to knock it back and make it easier to cover. If Japanese stuff ain’t your bag and you don’t want to compromise then laser is the way to go. I’m not saying you can only cover with Japanese work but it’s good (just before the trolls come rolling in!!!!)Hope that helps a little, can’t help a lot as I have no idea what you have now to cover
